Jason Mate's expertise is in
the subfamily Aphodiinae (particularly Aphodiini) where his
research interests are in systematics, phylogenetics, ecology
and evolution. He is currently completing his PhD under the
supervision of Dr. Alfried Vogler at the British Natural History
Museum. His research uses molecular markers to address the phylogenetics
of the Aphodiini and its placement within the subfamily Aphodiinae.
This novel phylogenetic information will be used to enhance
our understanding of the evolution of dung feeding and other
ecologically interesting behaviors in the Aphodiinae and to
assess the reliability of current morphological data.
In conjunction with his doctoral studies, he is working on revisions
of the genus Ataenius from Africa, the subgenus Liothorax
(Aphodius), and studying the ecology of Aphodius
communities in the Mediterranean, southern China, and Australasia. |
