Abstract

In this faunal study, 197 species from 12 subfamilies are recorded from Nebraska. Thirty one species (16% of the scarabs in the state) are recorded for the first time, and one new species of Aphodius was discovered. This study is the first to provide a detailed survey of the Scarabaeidae of any single state in the United States in a single volume. The state of Nebraska is introduced by discussions of physical, climatic, and vegetational parameters. A brief analysis of biogeography, as it pertains to scarabs in Nebraska, is also presented. The treatment for each species consists of synonymy, description, general distribution, Nebraska locality records, temporal distribution in the state, remarks on identification, reference to larval descriptions for each species when available, and information about ecology and biology of each species when known. Distribution maps, showing detailed Nebraska records, are given for nearly all species. Habitus drawings for most species are provided. Each subfamily, tribe, and genus is introduced followed by keys to adults and, when known, larvae. The keys are supplemented with numerous line drawings. A checklist, extensive bibliography, and a glossary are also included.
