Bolax costipennis Machatschke, 1974: 249. NEW HOMONYM, NEW SYNONYM

BRAZIL: Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo

Note: Machatschke (1974b) is credited with the name B. costipennis (e.g., Frey 1976), but Ohaus (1928) properly described the species. Erroneously, Machatschke (1974b) stated that he was newly describing a species using Ohaus’ labeled specimens and maintaining Ohaus’ given name for that species.  Machatschke was unaware that Ohaus (1928) had described the species.  According to these publications, Machatschke and Ohaus used the same specimens for the type series. According to Article 60.2 (ICZN 1999), if the rejected junior homonym has one or more potentially valid synonyms, the oldest of these names is the valid name of the taxon (B. costipennis Ohaus in this case).

syn. Bolax vittatus Casey, 1915: 105 (synonym by Ratcliffe 2002: 26)  invalid synonym

PANAMA: Bocas del Toro, Canal Zone, Chiriqui, Darien; COSTA RICA

Note:  Ratcliffe (2002) synonymized Bolax vittatus Casey in error.  Ratcliffe studied Casey’s type specimen and determined that it was congeneric with Trizogeniates foveicollis Ohaus.  However, in a “senior moment” (pers. comm. to MLJ, Oct. 2004), Casey’s name and the synonymy were misplaced in Ratcliffe’s (2002) publication.  Villatoro (2002) correctly synonymized B. vittatus Casey with T. foveicollis.
