Distribution: from the highlands of Costa Rica and Panama.

Composition: Barutus is a monotypic genus.

Diagnosis: it is easily distinguished from other Central American Pentodontini by its reddish brown color, relatively large size (up to 34 mm in length), large and externally lobed mandibles, and heavily punctate elytra.

Biological notes: nothing is known of their biology or immature stages other than adults are attracted to lights at night.
