Distribution: Boreal North America, Northern United States and southern Canada to the Rocky Mountains south to Utah, New Mexico and Arizona.

The correct name for this species is Platycerus depressus LeConte. Benesh (1946) erroneously used the name P. piceus Kirby, but that name is not available (it is invalid because it is based on a misidentification of Ceruchus piceus (Weber)).
