"A Walk Through Time"
Opened October 8, 2004
Sharks, dinosaurs and rhinos don't come to mind when most people think of Nebraska, but they all have a common history in this part of the country, as illustrated in "A Walk Through Time," a new exhibit at the University of Nebraska State Museum at Morrill Hall. This new display on the main floor of the museum introduces visitors to the vast scale of geologic time and ties other exhibits seen throughout the museum into the immense range of time. Two-dimensional exhibit panels, featuring three-dimensional fossil displays, are used to illustrate the types of life forms that existed in the region throughout the Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic Eras. Exhibit highlights include illustrations and fossils from Nebraska excavation sites including Toadstool Park, Agate National Monument and Ashfall Fossil Beds Historic Park.

The rare fossils -- including parts of a long-necked plesiosaur, a horned dinosaur and large predatory fish -- were selected from the world-famous collection from the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln, and have not previously been exhibited to the public, according to Rick Otto, park superintendent.
The Friends of the University of Nebraska State Museum welcomed new members to help paleontologists uncover new fossils at Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, a fossil site of international significance left intact for public viewing.
